Pharmacogenetics is generally regarded as the study of genetic variations that gives rise to different response to drugs.

Several members of Cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP), VKORC1, the N-acetyltransferases NAT-1 and NAT-2, the Gluatthiontransferases GTT1, GTP1 and GTS1 as well as the Thiopurin Methyltransferase (TPMT) are the most important enzymes which are involved in the metabolism of common drugs.

From CYP the most important members are CYP 2D6, 2C9 (Warfarin metabolism) and 2C19.
