Rats detecting landmines in former war zones and tuberculosis in human samples

Recently a newspaper article reported on the HeroRATS program, training African giant pouched rats to detect landmines.

The affectionately called HeroRATS help the rural poor – especially women and young children – who are threatened by these perfidious, non-visible weapons.
Thanks to the HeroRATS large swaths of land have been cleared of this threat. Intrigued and fascinated by this innovative idea TIB MOLBIOL decided to adopt several rats with a substantial donation.

Meanwhile the HeroRATS are also capable of detecting tuberculosis in human samples through their keen sense of smell.
We welcome this development, because it offers a quick and cost effective alternative to traditional laboratory microscopy or PCR testing.
